What is Superlatives?

The Superlative icebreaker game is a simple and engaging activity that I like to use in medium to extra-large groups. This get-to-know-you style game involves players lining up in ascending order based on various categories such as height, birthday month, shoe size, or number of siblings. The purpose of the game is to encourage teamwork, communication, and socialization among participants, making it an excellent choice for icebreaker events.

During the game, players are divided into teams and must work together to line up in the correct order based on the category called out by the facilitator. The first team to correctly line up and sit down earns a point, with the game continuing until all categories have been covered. This icebreaker is flexible and can be played both indoors and outdoors without requiring any special materials.

What I like most about the Superlative icebreaker game is its versatility in terms of category selection. While surface-level categories such as height or shoe size are easy to understand, deeper categories can also be used to encourage meaningful conversations and self-reflection among participants. Additionally, various variations, such as “no talking allowed” or “head and feet only,” can be added to make the game more challenging and fun. Overall, the Superlative icebreaker game is a fantastic way to promote teamwork, communication, and socialization in any group setting.

Rules for Superlatives

  1. The group is split into at least three teams with ideally 5-9 players per team.
  2. A facilitator prepares a list of categories for players to line up in ascending order (e.g. height, birthday month, shoe size, number of siblings).
  3. When the first category is announced, each team scrambles to get in the proper order.
  4. The first team to correctly get in order and sits down gets awarded a point.
  5. The facilitator checks each team and awards zero points if they made a mistake.
  6. The process repeats until all categories have been covered.
  7. Variations include:
    • No talking allowed, players must rely on body language and hand gestures to get in the proper order.
    • Head and feet only, players can only use their head and feet to signal where to go with no talking or use of arms/hands to communicate.

Setting up for Superlatives

To set up for the Superlatives icebreaker activity, the facilitator needs to prepare a list of categories for the players to line up by. These categories can be based on surface-level traits such as height or shoe size, or they can be deeper categories that align with the goals of the gathering. The facilitator should divide the group into teams of at least five people, with no more than nine players per team. It is important to explain the rules clearly and consider using variations such as “no talking allowed” or “head and feet only” to add an extra challenge to the game. The game can be played both indoors and outdoors, making it a versatile icebreaker option for groups of all ages and sizes.

How to play Superlatives

  1. Prepare a list of categories: As the facilitator, I need to come up with a variety of categories for players to line up by. These can be simple, surface-level traits like height or birthday month, or they can be more in-depth depending on my goals.

  2. Split the group into teams: I will divide the larger group into smaller teams, making sure each team has at least five players, but no more than nine. This ensures that everyone can participate and be involved in the game.

  3. Explain the rules: I will clearly explain the objective of the game and the rules to ensure everyone understands how to play. I may consider adding a variation like “no talking allowed” or “head and feet only” for an extra challenge.

  4. Have teams line up by category: When I read a category, each team should quickly organize themselves in the correct order based on that trait. The first team to correctly get in order and sit down will earn a point.

  5. Check and verify: After a team sits down, I will check their order and either award them points or ask them to try again if they made any mistakes. This process continues until all categories have been covered.

  6. Consider variations: To make the game more interesting, consider implementing one of the suggested variations like “no talking allowed” or “head and feet only.” These challenges encourage non-verbal communication and add an extra layer of fun.

Tips for making Superlatives more inclusive

  • Consider using categories that are relevant to all players. Instead of relying solely on physical attributes like height or shoe size, try incorporating more diverse categories such as alphabetical order of favorite hobbies or birthplaces. This will ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate and excel in the game.
  • Encourage the use of respectful language and gestures. Make sure all players understand the importance of being mindful of their words and actions during the game. Encourage them to communicate effectively without resorting to harmful stereotypes or offensive language.
  • Adapt categories based on the group’s age range and abilities. If you have a mixed-age group, make sure to use categories that are appropriate for everyone. For example, if you include a category like “number of countries visited,” provide alternatives like “number of states/provinces visited” or “favorite places explored in your hometown” for younger players.
  • Be open to suggestions and feedback from participants. Invite players to share their thoughts on the game and suggest categories that reflect their interests and experiences. This will help create a more inclusive atmosphere and ensure that everyone feels valued and represented.
  • Create an environment where making mistakes is okay. Emphasize that the primary goal of the Superlatives icebreaker is to have fun and get to know one another, rather than to compete or win. Encourage players to view any errors as learning opportunities and a chance to improve their teamwork and communication skills.
  • Model inclusive behavior as the facilitator. Throughout the game, be mindful of your own language and actions, striving to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and respectful for all participants. By doing so, you’ll demonstrate the importance of inclusivity and foster a positive experience for everyone involved.
