What is Mafia?

The Mafia icebreaker is a strategic group game that involves players assuming different roles in a simulated town, with the objective of identifying and eliminating mafia members while avoiding being eliminated themselves. The purpose of this activity is to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and social interaction among participants, making it an excellent choice for gatherings or events where people may not know each other well.

At its core, Mafia is a game of deception and deduction, in which players must use their wits and observation skills to uncover the true identities of their fellow players. Each round begins with a “nighttime” phase, during which certain roles (such as mafia members or the doctor) have the opportunity to secretly make choices that affect the game’s outcome. This is followed by a “daytime” phase, in which players discuss and vote on who they believe to be a mafia member, with the person receiving the most votes being eliminated from the game.

The goal of the game is for either the mafia members to eliminate all townspeople, or for the police or townspeople to successfully identify and eliminate all mafia members. The game continues until one group has achieved their objective, making it a thrilling and engaging experience for all involved.

Mafia is an excellent icebreaker that can help build trust and rapport among participants, while also providing a fun and challenging mental workout. Whether played with friends or strangers, this game is sure to provide hours of entertainment and social connection.

Rules for Mafia

  1. The game involves five roles: narrator, two mafia members, two police members, one doctor, and townspeople.
  2. The narrator prepares playing cards to determine the roles. One ace for mafia, one king for police, one queen for doctor, and number cards for townspeople.
  3. Players randomly pick a card without revealing their role.
  4. During nighttime, players close their eyes and follow the narrator’s instructions:
    • Mafia members wake up to choose someone to eliminate.
    • Police members wake up to point out who they suspect is mafia.
    • The doctor wakes up to protect one person from elimination.
  5. During daytime, players discuss and vote on who to eliminate based on suspicion.
  6. A majority vote (50% or above) determines the eliminated player.
  7. The police or townspeople win by eliminating all mafia members, while the mafia wins by eliminating all townspeople.

Setting up for Mafia

To set up for the Mafia icebreaker activity, you will need a narrator who prepares for the game by creating a deck of cards. The deck should consist of two aces (representing mafia), two kings (representing police), one queen (representing the doctor), and several number cards for the remaining roles of townspeople. The narrator shuffles the cards and deals one to each player, who then assumes the corresponding role for the round. The game involves strategy, bluffing, and deduction as players try to figure out the identities of other players while keeping their own identity a secret.

How to play Mafia

  1. Prepare the playing cards: As the game leader, prepare a deck of playing cards to determine who plays which role in the game. Take out two aces (Mafia), two kings (Police), one queen (Doctor), and several number cards for the Townspeople. Shuffle these cards and have each person randomly select a card without revealing their identity.
  2. Understand your role: Based on the selected card, assume the corresponding role: Mafia member, Police, Doctor, or Townsperson. The objective is to eliminate the mafia (for Police, Doctor, and Townspeople) or eliminate all Townspeople (for Mafia).
  3. Start nighttime: Once everyone has their roles, arrange players in a circle with you (the game leader) outside the circle. At nighttime, have everyone close their eyes and “go to sleep.”
  4. Mafia, wake up: Quietly instruct the Mafia members to open their eyes and choose someone to eliminate by pointing at them. Take note of the chosen person but do not reveal it yet.
  5. Police, wake up: Next, have the Police members open their eyes and point to a suspected Mafia member. Confirm silently if the suspicion is correct.
  6. Doctor’s turn: Allow the Doctor to awake and quietly choose someone to protect for the night.
  7. Wake everyone up: Announce that it’s morning, and have everyone open their eyes.
  8. Reveal daytime elimination: If the Mafia targeted a person protected by the Doctor, announce that “nobody was eliminated.” Otherwise, reveal the eliminated person, who must leave the circle and not speak for the rest of the game.
  9. Daytime discussion/voting: During the day, nominate and vote on people suspected of being Mafia. The nominated person can defend themselves before voting takes place. The individual receiving the majority vote is eliminated.
  10. Winning conditions: Keep playing until all Mafia members are eliminated (Police, Doctor, and Townspeople win), or all Townspeople are eliminated (Mafia wins).
