What is Capture the Flag?
As the facilitator of the Capture the Flag icebreaker, I aim to create an engaging and enjoyable experience that promotes teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. This classic game is a fun adaptation of “It Tag” and involves two teams competing against each other to locate and recover the opposing team’s flag while defending their own. The twist is that players risk being tagged and sent to “jail” when they enter enemy territory.
The purpose of this icebreaker is to encourage participants to work together, think strategically, and engage in physical activity. By dividing the group into two teams, each member must communicate and collaborate effectively to succeed. The game’s fast-paced nature also ensures that everyone remains engaged and energized throughout the activity. Additionally, the “jail” element adds a layer of excitement and strategy, as team members must coordinate rescues and counterattacks while avoiding capture themselves.
During Capture the Flag, participants can expect lots of running, chasing, and laughing, fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere. The game’s simplicity and versatility make it an excellent choice for various settings and age groups, ensuring that everyone has fun and builds connections with their peers.
Rules for Capture the Flag
- Divide players into two teams.
- Agree upon the legal boundaries of play.
- Determine the location of two “jails” (one for each team).
- Set up a middle boundary between the two teams.
- At the beginning of each round, each team hides and defends their own “flag.”
- The flag must not be obscured; it needs to be more than 50% visible.
- Optionally, you may have more than one flag if there are enough people.
- The object of the game is for one team to grab the flag of the other team and bring it over to their own side.
- When a member of the opposing team crosses over the middle boundary into the opposing team’s territory, they can be tagged by the other team and taken to a “jail.”
- Players stay in jail until they are released (tagged) by one of their own team members who has not yet been captured.
- Ensure there is plenty of space outdoors with no dangerous obstacles or hazards.
Materials needed for Capture the Flag
- Two flags: Durable, safe, and noticeable objects to represent each team’s flag.
- Outdoor space: A large area clear of dangerous obstacles or hazards for running and chasing.
Setting up for Capture the Flag
To set up for the Capture the Flag icebreaker activity, follow these steps:
-
Divide the players into two teams: Decide how many players will be on each team and assign players to their respective teams. It is recommended to have at least 20+ players for a more exciting game.
-
Agree upon the legal boundaries of play: Choose a large outdoor area that can accommodate the number of players and allow them to run around safely. Mark the boundaries clearly so that players know where they are allowed to go.
-
Determine the location of two “jails”: Designate an area for each team’s jail where captured players will wait to be released. Make sure the areas are easily accessible but not too close to each other or to the flags.
-
Set up a middle boundary: Mark a clear line or area that separates the two teams’ territories. This is the boundary that players must not cross until they have captured the opposing team’s flag.
-
Hide and defend the flags: Have each team hide their flag in a safe and visible location within their territory. Make sure the flag is at least 50% visible and can be easily seen by the opposing team. If there are enough players, consider having more than one flag per team for added complexity.
-
Ensure safety: Clear the area of any dangerous obstacles or hazards that could cause injury to players during the game. Remind players to stay safe and follow all rules to avoid accidents.
How to play Capture the Flag
- Divide the players into two teams: Split up the participants into two groups of equal size to ensure balanced gameplay.
- Agree upon the legal boundaries of play: Clearly define the area in which the game will take place to prevent any disputes or accidents.
- Determine the location of two ‘jails’ (one for each team): Choose a designated spot for captured players to wait until they are released by their teammates.
- Set up a middle boundary between the two teams: Mark a clear line that separates the two teams’ territories, which serves as a safety zone and prevents players from being tagged while in this area.
- Each team hides and defends their own ‘flag’: Have each team find a safe and accessible location within their territory to place their flag, then instruct them to guard it from the opposing team.
- The flag must not be obscured: Ensure that the flag is visible by at least 50% to prevent any confusion or disputes during gameplay.
- The object of the game is for one team to grab the flag of the other team and bring it over to their own side: Encourage teams to strategize and work together to achieve this goal while also protecting their own flag.
- When a member of the opposing team crosses over the middle boundary into the opposing team’s territory, they are allowed to be tagged by the other team: Clearly communicate the rules regarding tagging and emphasize sportsmanship during gameplay.
- Captured players stay in ‘jail’ until they are released (tagged) by one of their own team members who has not yet been captured: Explain the rules for releasing teammates from jail and remind players to keep track of which teammates have already been tagged.
- Ensure there is plenty of space outdoors and that the area is clear of any dangerous obstacles or hazards: Prioritize safety by choosing a suitable location for the game and removing any potential risks.

First, it is a highly engaging and interactive game that keeps everyone actively involved, which I appreciate in an icebreaker. The combination of running, chasing, and strategizing ensures that there’s never a dull moment, making it fun and exciting for all participants.
The team-based nature of Capture the Flag is another aspect that I like. Working together with my teammates to hide our flag, defend our territory, and strategize on how to capture the opposing team’s flag fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and collaboration. This dynamic helps create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels included and valued, which is essential for successful icebreaker activities.
Moreover, Capture the Flag offers a balance between competition and cooperation. While each team aims to capture the opposing team’s flag, there are also opportunities for both teams to collaborate by releasing their teammates from jail. Tips for making Capture the Flag more inclusive
- Tip: Use gender-neutral language Instead of using gendered terms like “guys” or “girls,” use gender-neutral words such as “players,” “teams,” or “everyone.” This will make all players feel included and welcome, regardless of their gender identity.
- Tip: Offer modifications for physical abilities Consider offering alternative ways to participate in the game for those with mobility limitations. For instance, you could allow them to be guards who can tag opponents but don’t have to run as much. This way, everyone can contribute and feel included, irrespective of their physical abilities.
- Tip: Encourage respectful communication Promote a positive atmosphere by reminding participants to communicate politely and respectfully. Using inclusive language and avoiding offensive comments will help create an enjoyable experience for all players.
- Tip: Offer a variety of roles To make the game more engaging, provide different roles that appeal to various skills and interests. For instance, you can have team members take on tasks like scouting, defending, or attacking. This way, everyone has an opportunity to contribute in their unique way, making the game more inclusive and fun for all.
- Tip: Provide clear rules and expectations Make sure that all players understand the rules and objectives of the game. Explain any jargon or specific terms and ensure everyone knows how to win and what constitutes a violation. This will help create a fair and enjoyable environment for everyone involved.
